Chelsea’s veteran defender Thiago Silva has indicated that he might be retiring from football after admitting that the end of his football career is very near. This is as his contract at Stamford Bridge gets closer and closer to an end. The 39-year-old joined Chelsea as a free agent in 2020 and will be out of contract in the summer.
The Brazilian played 27 Premier League games for Chelsea last season, and despite his age, he remains a very huge part of the Blues, having played 10 Premier League games for them this season. This has kept him in a situation where retiring is not exactly easy for him as he contemplates whether to extend his contract or not.
“The end of my career is approaching, and it’s not a simple thing. I have to think if I stop or if I continue and where I go: there’s the family; I have two sons who play at Chelsea. At the moment, I take this opportunity to play and make the most of this last year of my contract at Chelsea. But I’m very happy and proud of the career I’ve had, of what I’m doing now at 39 years old. I have prepared all my life to make the most of my work: football is my passion. Surely, after I retire, I will continue in this world; I don’t know how yet.” Silva said.
Silva was in action as Chelsea lost 2-0 to Brentford at Stamford Bridge on Saturday and is expected to be in the lineup as Chelsea hosts Blackburn in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday before facing local rivals Tottenham the following Monday.
The defender has played for AC Milan and PSG amongst many other teams, before moving to Stamford Bridge in 2020, where he has played well over 100 fixtures.
