Chelsea furious as Manchester City unveils Maresca

Manchester City have confirmed the appointment of Enzo Maresca as the club’s new head coach, with the Italian signing a three-year contract to replace Pep Guardiola following the legendary manager’s departure after a decade of unprecedented success.

The announcement brings an end to weeks of speculation, although negotiations over compensation delayed the official confirmation.

Chelsea have revealed that Maresca will personally pay compensation to the London club after resigning from his role midway through last season.

While Manchester City are understood to have agreed a separate compensation package worth around £17 million with Chelsea, the Blues say they have also reached a confidential settlement directly with the 46-year-old coach.

Maresca admitted that his decision to resign from Stamford Bridge created the opportunity for his return to the Etihad Stadium.

In a public statement, the former Chelsea boss apologized for the manner of his departure, insisting the decision was entirely his own.

Maresca acknowledged that leaving in the middle of the campaign disrupted Chelsea’s season, adding that it had never been his intention to cause instability at the club.

Chelsea, however, maintained that his resignation significantly affected the team’s campaign after the club had initially described the split as a mutual agreement.

Maresca’s departure came after Chelsea endured a difficult run of form, winning just one of their final seven Premier League matches under his leadership.

Despite the disappointing finish, his tenure still produced notable achievements, including qualification for the UEFA Champions League, victory at the FIFA Club World Cup, and triumph in the UEFA Conference League, making it the club’s most successful season since the current ownership took over.

The appointment also marks a return to familiar surroundings for Maresca, who previously worked as Guardiola’s assistant during Manchester City’s historic Treble-winning campaign in 2022-23.

City believe his knowledge of the club’s philosophy and close working relationship with Guardiola make him the ideal candidate to usher in a new era following one of the most successful managerial reigns in English football history.

While Chelsea have now drawn a line under the legal dispute surrounding Maresca’s exit, debate continues over the circumstances of his resignation.

The Blues insist his decision contributed to a disappointing end to their domestic campaign, while many supporters argue that deeper issues within the club also played a significant role.
