Late strike break South Africans hearts, as Canada progresses

Canada booked a historic place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 after Stephen Eustaquio struck a dramatic stoppage-time winner to secure a 1-0 victory over South Africa in Los Angeles.

The co-hosts needed a moment of brilliance deep into added time to break the deadlock in an evenly contested last-32 clash and reach the knockout stage for the first time in their history.

The match appeared destined for extra time after both sides struggled to create clear-cut opportunities for much of the contest.

South Africa defended resolutely while Canada dominated possession without finding the finishing touch, leaving fans inside Los Angeles Stadium anticipating another 30 minutes of football.

Canada’s attacking threat increased significantly following the introduction of Alphonso Davies, who made his first appearance of the tournament after recovering from injury.

The Bayern Munich star injected pace and creativity into Jesse Marsch’s side, creating chances for Jonathan David and stretching the South African defence during the closing stages.

Just when extra time seemed inevitable, Canada found the breakthrough in the second minute of stoppage time.

After South Africa failed to clear their lines, the ball fell kindly to Stephen Eustaquio on the edge of the penalty area, and the midfielder fired a superb low strike into the bottom corner beyond goalkeeper Ronwen Williams to spark wild celebrations among the Canadian players and supporters.

South Africa responded by throwing bodies forward in search of a late equaliser, but Canada held firm to preserve their slender advantage.

Goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau dealt confidently with the final attacks as the co-hosts completed a hard-fought victory over a South African side that battled bravely but ultimately lacked the cutting edge in the final third.

The victory sends Canada into the World Cup Round of 16, where they will face either the Netherlands or Morocco as they continue their remarkable tournament journey.

For head coach Jesse Marsch and his players, the result marks another milestone in Canadian football history and keeps alive their dream of making a deep run on home soil.
