Mudryk returns for Chelsea in Pre-season defeat to Juventus

Chelsea F.C. suffered a 1-0 defeat to Juventus FC in a pre-season friendly in Hong Kong on Wednesday, but the night’s biggest talking point was the long-awaited return of winger Mykhailo Mudryk.

The Ukrainian made his first appearance for the Blues in 20 months, coming on as an 82nd-minute substitute at the Kai Tak Sports Park following the end of his suspension.

Mudryk received a warm reception from the crowd of more than 43,000 fans, just days after completing his suspension for testing positive for the banned substance meldonium.

Playing on the left wing, the 25-year-old nearly connected with an overhit through ball, worked hard to press Juventus defenders, and delivered a late cross as he marked his first appearance since November 2024.

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso described the winger’s return as an emotional moment for the club.

Alonso said Mudryk was delighted to be back on the pitch after such a lengthy absence, adding that everyone associated with Chelsea shared in the excitement of seeing him return to competitive action.

Despite Mudryk’s comeback, Chelsea slipped to a second consecutive pre-season defeat.

Kosovo international Edon Zhegrova scored the only goal of the match in the 68th minute with a superb curling effort after being set up by Kenan Yıldız.

Chelsea created several opportunities but were unable to convert, with Danny Welbeck, Jamie Gittens, and Marco Palestra all missing chances.

There were also encouraging signs for Chelsea from teenage midfielder Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli, who continued to impress during pre-season.

The 16-year-old academy product started alongside Moisés Caicedo in midfield and displayed composure, energy, and confidence in possession, earning praise for his ability to compete against experienced opposition.

Alonso hailed Nicoll-Jazuli as a player with rare qualities for his age, describing him as a complete midfielder capable of passing, dribbling, and influencing games.

Chelsea are reportedly keen to accelerate the youngster’s development and believe he has the potential to make his competitive first-team debut during the upcoming season as the club continues its focus on promoting elite academy talent.
