Manchester United produced a remarkable second-half comeback to defeat Roma 3-2 in a thrilling Champions League encounter at Old Trafford on Tuesday, providing much-needed relief to under-pressure manager Michael Carrick.
United appeared headed for another disappointing result after conceding twice inside the opening 18 minutes. However, a spirited fightback after the break, inspired by Bruno Fernandes and Matheus Cunha, helped the home side secure a dramatic victory.
Roma made a flying start and stunned the Old Trafford crowd with two early goals. Mathias Soule opened the scoring with a clever finish before Donyell Malen doubled the visitors’ advantage from the penalty spot.
The quick goals left United facing a difficult challenge, with frustration growing among the home supporters. Carrick, already under considerable pressure, looked set for another damaging defeat as Roma took control of the contest.
However, the momentum shifted after halftime as United began to show greater urgency in attack.
Captain Bruno Fernandes sparked the comeback in the 58th minute, converting a penalty under unusual circumstances.
Roma’s third-choice goalkeeper Devis Vasquez initially denied the Portuguese midfielder from the spot. However, the referee ordered the penalty to be retaken after Roma players entered the penalty area too early.
Fernandes made no mistake with his second opportunity, firing past Vasquez to reduce the deficit and revive United’s hopes.
The goal transformed the atmosphere inside Old Trafford, with the home supporters sensing that a comeback was possible.
United continued to push forward in search of an equaliser, while Roma struggled to maintain the defensive discipline that had helped them establish their early advantage.
With the final whistle approaching, Cunha emerged as United’s hero, scoring twice within three minutes to complete an extraordinary turnaround.
His quickfire double sent the Old Trafford crowd into wild celebrations and turned what had appeared to be a humiliating defeat into a memorable European victory.
However, Cunha’s eventful evening ended on a disappointing note when he received a red card during stoppage time.
For Roma, the defeat marked another painful collapse after previously surrendering a commanding advantage against Real Madrid in their only other loss of the season.
Despite their impressive start, the Italian side failed to capitalise on United’s early struggles and ultimately paid the price for allowing the hosts back into the contest.
The dramatic victory offers Carrick valuable breathing space ahead of the upcoming international break, although United’s defensive vulnerabilities remain a concern.
For now, the comeback provides a timely boost to United’s confidence and gives their supporters a memorable Champions League night at Old Trafford.
