Chelsea return to Premier League top four with 3-1 win over Wolves

Chelsea jumped back into the Premier League’s top four with a 3-1 victory over relegation-threatened Wolverhampton Wanderers at Stamford Bridge. The win marked a welcome return to form for the Blues, who had been struggling in recent weeks. Despite Wolves’ poor form, Chelsea started strongly, with Cole Palmer testing José Sá with a low drive from inside the box.

The breakthrough came midway through the first half when Trevoh Chalobah’s long ball forward was headed past Sá by Matt Doherty, only for the Irishman to concede a corner. From the resulting set piece, Reece James’ shot found its way to Tosin Adarabioyo, who converted coolly from close range. The goal was initially ruled out for offside but eventually counted after a VAR review.

Wolves grew into the contest and leveled just before halftime as Matheus Cunha’s corner was fumbled by Robert Sánchez, with Doherty bundling in the loose ball. However, Chelsea retook the lead just before the hour mark as Noni Madueke’s cross was flicked on by Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall into the path of Marc Cucurella, who steered the ball past Sá despite losing his balance.

The Blues doubled their lead when Palmer’s inviting free-kick was nodded across goal by Chalobah, with Madueke applying the finishing touch. This was Wolves’ 19th goal conceded from a set-piece in the league this season, highlighting their ongoing struggles with defending dead-ball situations.

Chelsea ultimately closed out the match, leapfrogging Newcastle United and Manchester City in the process. However, the Blues have now kept just one clean sheet in their last 12 home league games, a statistic that will concern manager Enzo Maresca.

The win sets up a crucial clash for Chelsea next Saturday against Manchester City, while Wolves will host Arsenal earlier that same day. Wolves remain above the bottom three only on goal difference and will be desperate to pick up points to avoid being dragged into the relegation zone.
