Chelsea’s plans to make a move for AC Milan’s goalkeeper, Mike Maignan, could face a hurdle with reports of an imminent contract extension. The Blues have been on the hunt for another shot-stopper, and Maignan has emerged as a target for the January transfer window.
Maignan, who has been a standout figure since his arrival in Italy, has caught the attention of several top clubs. In the summer, both Manchester United and Chelsea expressed interest in the 28-year-old French international. However, Chelsea eventually acquired Robert Sanchez from Brighton and loaned Kepa Arrizabalaga to Real Madrid, but they seem determined to secure a new No.1.
Sanchez has been dependable this season, but Chelsea’s interest in Maignan persists. Recent reports suggested that Chelsea might prepare a fresh bid for Maignan, especially due to uncertainties surrounding a new contract with AC Milan.
The primary issue revolves around Maignan’s financial demands, which AC Milan may not be willing to meet. Despite this, the latest reports indicate that Maignan remains open to renewing his contract with the Serie A club, potentially complicating Chelsea’s pursuit.
Chelsea is keen to seize the opportunity presented by Maignan’s current situation and make their concrete interest known to the player. AC Milan, on the other hand, would like to retain him and secure a new deal, which could protect his market value and keep him with the club at least until the summer.
Should Maignan sign the contract extension, it would likely require a significant fee to lure him away. The reported €100 million price tag set by AC Milan during the summer deterred suitors, and if they manage to secure his future, they could demand a high transfer fee in the future.
The question remains whether Chelsea is prepared to make a substantial investment in the player. While they currently have a reliable goalkeeper in their ranks, they might consider pouncing on the opportunity in January if any complications arise in Maignan’s contract renewal.
