Dalot Strike Not Enough as Manchester United Held to Frustrating 1-1 Draw by West Ham

Manchester United missed a valuable chance to climb to fifth in the Premier League table after being held to a 1-1 draw by West Ham United at Old Trafford on Thursday. The result keeps United eighth on 22 points, while West Ham remains stuck in the relegation zone in 18th place with 12 points, two behind Leeds United.

The opening half offered little excitement as both sides struggled to impose themselves. West Ham enjoyed the better share of possession in the first half-hour, but despite the slow pace, it rarely threatened André Onana’s goal. Manchester United gradually gained momentum, with the first real spark coming when Bryan Mbeumo combined from a short corner and unleashed a looping strike that forced Alphonse Areola to scramble and tip the effort over the bar.

United pushed harder as Amad Diallo delivered a dangerous cross into the box. Joshua Zirkzee directed it goalward with his thigh, only for former United defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka to clear the attempt off the line. Moments later, Bruno Fernandes saw his effort glance just wide of the post. West Ham’s defence, anchored impressively by Wan-Bissaka, held firm as the visitors reached halftime level.

Early in the second half, Soungoutou Magassa fired into the side netting, giving United an early scare. But the home side broke the deadlock in the 58th minute. Casemiro’s initial shot took a deflection, dropping kindly to Diogo Dalot near the penalty spot. Dalot reacted quickly, turning and firing past Areola to give United a 1-0 lead.

The match appeared to be drifting toward a narrow victory for the hosts, as West Ham struggled to create meaningful chances. However, the visitors found a late burst of energy. Jarrod Bowen’s flicked header from a corner was cleared off the line by Noussair Mazraoui, but the danger wasn’t over. Magassa reacted fastest and drilled the ball home seven minutes from time, silencing the home crowd and prompting boos at the final whistle.

The late equaliser opened up the game, with both sides pushing for a winner. Fernandes had opportunities to restore United’s lead but failed to convert. In the end, a lacklustre performance from Manchester United resulted in a disappointing draw, while West Ham secured a crucial point in its fight to escape relegation.
