Bayern Munich young star Paul Wanner is garnering significant interest from several clubs as he continues to shine during his loan spell at FC Heidenheim.
One of their fierce rivals, Bayern, has also joined the race to sign Wanner.
The 18-year-old has been closely monitored by the Dortmund scouts for several years, but recently his name has been mentioned much more frequently in the meetings of the Dortmund management.
This signals the possibility that Dortmund could make a serious attempt to sign Wanner, whether on loan or permanently, in the upcoming summer transfer window.
Dortmund’s main argument to convince Wanner would be the promise of regular game time, which the player would struggle to get in his parent club.
With Jamal Musiala already being a nailed-on starter for Bayern in the attacking midfielder position, Wanner would likely have to play second fiddle to him if he were to return to Munich.
While Dortmund aims to purchase Wanner permanently, they may have to settle with a loan deal as Bayern aren’t considering a sale for the 18-year-old.
Christoph Freund confirmed in November that Wanner remains part of Bayern’s plans despite the interest from other clubs.
Now, If Bayern asses that the player still requires more development and game time, then only a loan deal would be the realistic option.
The youngster rose through the ranks of Bayern Munich’s academy and eventually got a few opportunities to play for the senior team.
To further his development, he was sent on loan to 2. Bundesliga side SV Elversberg for the 2023–24 season.
In the ongoing season, he is on loan to Bundesliga side FC Heidenheim, where the 18-year-old has been the standout performer.
Despite the club’s overall poor form as they languish in the 16th position, Wanner has been impressive, scoring six goals across all competitions.
He is Heidenheim’s top-scorer this season. It’s a good sign for Bayern, who will be happy that their player continues to get valuable game time in the Bundesliga and the UEFA Conference League.
