Emile Smith Rowe Edges Closer to Fulham Move as Arsenal Eye New Signings

Emile Smith Rowe’s potential transfer to Fulham is gaining momentum, with negotiations progressing steadily. The 23-year-old forward was notably absent from Arsenal’s pre-season friendly against Bournemouth in the United States, further fueling speculation about his imminent departure.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta’s decision to exclude Smith Rowe from the squad has added weight to the ongoing transfer talks.

Fulham initially had a £30 million bid for Smith Rowe rejected last week but have since returned with an improved offer worth up to £35 million, including add-ons. This figure, if accepted, would surpass the club’s record transfer fee of £27 million, paid for Jean Michaël Seri in 2018.

Arteta hinted at Smith Rowe’s possible exit following the 1-1 draw with Bournemouth, where he chose to field a youthful lineup. “There are things happening in the background at the moment,” Arteta stated. “We decided the best thing to do was to keep him away from the game today.”

Smith Rowe’s career at Arsenal has seen a decline since he last represented England in 2022. Injuries and increased competition have limited his appearances, with only 346 minutes played in the Premier League last season, including three starts.

This reduced playing time has led to interest from several clubs, including Crystal Palace. However, Fulham appears to be in the lead to secure his signature.

Despite his apparent fall from favour, Smith Rowe’s potential move has stirred mixed feelings among Arsenal supporters, who have seen him rise through the academy ranks. The decision to let him go comes as Arsenal prepares to bolster their squad with new signings.

The acquisition of Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna for an initial £33.6 million is set to be finalized, with the Italian defender expected to complete his medical in the U.S. and join the squad on a five-year deal.

Additionally, Arsenal is reportedly turning their attention to Real Sociedad’s Mikel Merino as they continue to reinforce their midfield options. Arteta’s focus on integrating young talent was evident in the pre-season match, with Under-17 internationals Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri making their debuts.

“We have a very different context today with so many young players – most of them making their debuts for us,” Arteta commented. “And I think the senior players had a good game. It was a really competitive match against Bournemouth as we expected.”

Meanwhile, Fulham is also set to re-sign Ryan Sessegnon, who has been training with Crystal Palace. The 24-year-old left-back, previously a free agent after leaving Tottenham, will return to Fulham, where he initially made his mark before his £25 million move to Spurs in 2019.

As Smith Rowe inches closer to his move, Fulham is poised to secure a significant addition to their squad, while Arsenal continues to reconfigure their team dynamics with new arrivals and the promotion of academy talents. The coming weeks promise to bring more clarity and finality to these transfers, shaping their rosters ahead of the new season.
