Timothy Castagne has reportedly claimed that he wishes to start for Belgium at the Euros this summer. Timothy Castagne has developed as a versatile right sided defender over the last two seasons, but he is seen as the 2nd choice right wing back to Thomas Meunier for the Belgium national squad.
Timothy Castagne, who recently won the FA cup with Leicester had a very good debut season with the Foxes. The start of his campaign was brilliant and although he was hit with an injury later on, he made a valuable contribution in their cup success.
“The coach decides, but I’m competitive and you cannot say that you don’t want to be in the starting line-up,” Castagne told a news conference.
“I see myself as a starter. That may sound arrogant, but it’s my ambition. I want to fight for my place.”
Thomas Meunier is regarded as Martinez’s preferred choice at right wing back, but given that he didn’t get much game time with Dortmund this season Timothy Castagne isn’t a bad shout for a worthy replacement if form is anything to go by.
“Thomas and I talk a lot. I know what it is when you don’t play much, but Thomas is mentally strong,” he said.
“Look, it’s hard to say I’m better than a team mate, Thomas Meunier in this case. It’s going to be a tough choice for the coach anyway, but at least I’m closer to the role than last season. I will be there when the coach needs me.”
Timothy Castagne versatility is well documented. He can not only play at right back or right wing back, but has also been utilised as a left back and even a centre back at times over the course of his career.
“I don’t think that is where I contribute the most, but because of many injuries I’ve had to play in three to four different positions,” Castagne said.
“My versatility is sometimes a disadvantage, but I don’t really care where I play. Of course, I’d prefer to play on the right, but if I can help the team, I’ll go anywhere.”
