FIFA lifts Balogun’s suspension on probation as player cleared for Belgium clash

In a dramatic reversal, the United States Men’s National Team received a significant boost when FIFA suspended Folarin Balogun’s one-game suspension, allowing the striker to feature in the crucial Round of 16 match against Belgium.

Balogun was sent off with a red card during the United States’ July 1 clash against Bosnia and Herzegovina for a serious foul.

The automatic suspension that followed threatened to sideline the American forward for the knockout-stage encounter.

However, earlier today, FIFA announced it was suspending the implementation of that ban under Article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code (FDC).

The official statement read: “By operation of Article 27 FDC, the implementation of the automatic match suspension for USA player Folarin Balogun is suspended for a probationary period of one (1) year.”

Article 27 empowers FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee to review and partially or fully suspend sanctions.

In Balogun’s case, the one-match ban has been placed on hold for twelve months. Should the player avoid any further serious fouls during this probationary window, the suspension will be entirely lifted.

This decision came without a formal appeal from the U.S. Soccer Federation, as officials had previously confirmed no appeal route existed for the initial red card.

The committee appears to have initiated the review independently to address what many viewed as a harsh call.

The move marks a major turning point for both Balogun and the USMNT. The young striker has emerged as one of the breakout stars of the tournament and currently leads the scoring charts for one of the host nations.

His availability significantly strengthens American attacking options against a formidable Belgian side.

Such interventions are not without precedent. Cristiano Ronaldo famously benefited from a reduction of a three-game suspension to two during a previous World Cup, a ruling that sparked debate over preferential treatment for star players.

While Balogun does not yet command the same global profile, his importance to the U.S. campaign cannot be overstated.

Regardless of the circumstances surrounding the decision, this probationary reprieve represents a substantial victory for the American squad as they prepare for the knockout rounds.
