Leclerc wins British GP as both Ferrari drivers made podium

Charles Leclerc won the British Grand Prix on Sunday after leading Ferrari to victory in a race at Silverstone that ended behind the safety car following a late crash by Max Verstappen.

The win ended a nearly two-year victory drought for Leclerc since his last victory at the US Grand Prix in 2024

Leclerc stayed near the front throughout the race and moved into a position to fight for victory as changing conditions and strategy calls reshaped the order.

Ferrari judged the timing of its tyre changes well, allowing the Monegasque to take control before the late safety car froze the field.

This allowed him to finish ahead of home favourites, George Russell and Lewis Hamilton.

Verstappen’s crash in the closing laps brought out the safety car and removed any chance of a final-lap battle.

With no time left to resume racing, Leclerc crossed the finish line first to secure his first victory in a long time, boosting Ferrari’s standing on the constructors’ table.

Russell’s second-place finish helped secure points for Mercedes after Saturday’s Sprint race winner, Kimi Antonelli, finished 16th due to car issues.

The British driver gained track position by staying out during the closing stages while several rivals made late pit stops, and he held onto the position until the finish.

Leclerc’s teammate, Hamilton, completed the podium in third to cap a productive afternoon for Ferrari.

Hamilton remained in contention throughout the race and added another Silverstone podium to his career record.

He was later investigated for a possible yellow-flag infringement after the race, for which he received a reprimand.

The victory continued Ferrari’s recent improvement and rewarded a race that was decided as much by strategy as outright pace. Leclerc avoided mistakes as conditions changed and stayed in the right position when the decisive moments arrived.

Both Mercedes drivers remain at the top of the drivers’ standings, while Mercedes leads the rest of the teams.

Neither lead is significant, however, and more has to be done by the German team if they hope to win titles this season.

Ferrari has enough within them to put up a fight, and fans can expect that to define the rest of the season.
