Foden nets twice as City win Manchester derby

Phil Foden scored a second-half brace to see Manchester City come from behind to defeat Manchester United 3-1 in the Manchester derby on Sunday to keep up with the Premier League title race.

Marcus Rashford scored a stunning first-half strike in just barely eight minutes to put the Reds in front. Manchester City could have equalized before the end of the first half, but Andre Onana was in top form to deny Pep Guardiola’s side.

However, Phil Foden scored a second-half brace, with the first coming just eleven minutes into the second, while he put the team ahead with ten minutes left. Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola believes that the English midfielder is the best in the league currently.

“It is the amount of games he is playing. He was always a talented player, but now he is more mature and understands the game more, especially defensively. He can play middle and right, make moments and cut inside, play in the left, scoring from the left. What can I say? He is the best player in the Premier League right now for the amount of things he does. Unbelievable.” Guardiola said.

Erling Haaland put the icing on the cake for Manchester City with a stoppage-time goal that denied any possibility of a comeback for Erik Ten Hag’s side.

The win puts Manchester City just a point behind Liverpool on the Premier League table after Liverpool’s late goal secured a 1-0 win at Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

The third wheel in the Premier League title race, Arsenal are now four points behind Manchester City and five points behind the league leaders Liverpool. However, Mikel Arteta’s men will face Sheffield United on Monday with a chance to reduce the points deficit.

Also on Sunday, Bournemouth defeated Burnley 2-0 at Turf Moor, putting Vincent Kompany’s job at further risk.
