Fulham has strongly condemned the racist and homophobic online abuse directed at defender Calvin Bassey following Sunday’s FA Cup penalty shootout win at Manchester United. Bassey, who scored the opening goal at Old Trafford, shared examples of the unsavory abuse he received on social media.
The Nigerian defender’s online abuse is the latest in a series of recent cases involving Everton midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure, England defender Kyle Walker, Newcastle United’s Joe Willock, and Manchester City’s Khadija Shaw. Fulham has expressed its full support for Bassey and vowed to work with authorities to identify the perpetrators and take action against them.
Fulham’s statement read, “We strongly condemn this abhorrent behavior which has no place in football or society. Such actions are entirely unacceptable, and we stand in full support of Calvin Bassey, who will continue to receive our full backing.” The club’s swift response has been praised by anti-discrimination groups.
The incident highlights the ongoing issue of online abuse in football. Samuel Okafor, chief executive of anti-discrimination body Kick It Out, recently stated that the level of abuse in English football has “reached crisis point.” The organization has called for tougher action against perpetrators and greater support for victims.
Fulham’s victory over Manchester United has been overshadowed by the disturbing abuse directed at Bassey. The club will host Crystal Palace in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, and fans will be hoping for a more positive focus on the match.
The football community has come together to condemn the abuse and show support for Bassey. The incident serves as a reminder of the need for greater action to tackle online abuse and ensure that football is a welcoming and inclusive environment for all.
