Gakpo suffers ankle injury blow as injury list pile for Netherlands

Liverpool have been handed another injury setback during the international break after Cody Gakpo returned to Merseyside with an ankle problem.

The Dutch forward sustained the injury in the Netherlands’ 2-1 Nations League victory over Serbia on Sunday. Gakpo was forced off after just 17 minutes following a heavy challenge.

Although head coach Xavi initially suggested the issue did not appear serious, subsequent medical tests on Monday confirmed he would miss the remainder of the international window. 

He has withdrawn from the squad for the Netherlands’ final two fixtures, with no replacement called up.

Liverpool confirmed that Gakpo will undergo further assessment at the club’s training center but offered no timescale for his recovery.

 The timing is particularly frustrating for the 25-year-old, who has enjoyed an impressive start to the season. 

Despite speculation linking him with moves to Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City during the summer transfer window, Gakpo has established himself as a key figure at Anfield.

He currently leads the club for goal involvements with six in all competitions: two goals and four assists. 

His creativity has also stood out: the 13 chances he has created rank second only to teammate Dominik Szoboszlai. 

Gakpo’s ability to influence games from the left flank or centrally has made him an important option in Arne Slot’s attacking setup.

The injury adds to Liverpool’s growing list of concerns as they prepare for a demanding run of fixtures.

The Reds return to Premier League action against Manchester City on 11 October, a high-stakes clash that will test their squad depth. 

Fans will hope Gakpo’s absence is short-lived, given his early-season form and the quality he brings to the side.
