Arsenal moved three points clear at the top of the Premier League after securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.
Kai Havertz scored the decisive goal as Mikel Arteta’s side recorded their first league win away to Liverpool since 2012.
Havertz scored the winning goal in the 16th minute, finishing a move created by Declan Rice.
“This means a lot to the whole football club, and it’s been 14 years; that is a crazy stat, and I think that we are all happy that we gave it to them today,” Havertz said.
The goal gave Arsenal an early advantage and put Liverpool under pressure to respond in front of their home supporters.
Liverpool pushed forward in search of an equalizer but struggled to break through Arsenal’s well-organized defense.
The Gunners remained disciplined throughout the contest, closing down spaces and preventing the home side from creating clear-cut scoring opportunities.
Arsenal’s defensive performance drew praise from former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock, who described the display as a masterclass in defending.
The Gunners maintained their shape, covered for one another and dealt effectively with Liverpool’s repeated crosses into the penalty area.
Havertz said the victory meant a great deal to the club, particularly because of the long wait for a league win at Anfield.
He also praised Rice’s contribution to the goal, saying most of the credit belonged to the England midfielder.
Rice, meanwhile, highlighted the team’s unity and determination in dealing with Liverpool’s relentless attacks.
He also said manager Mikel Arteta had challenged him to contribute more to the club at the start of the season.
The result extended Arsenal’s strong defensive record, with the team keeping six clean sheets in their first nine league matches.
The victory also gave Arteta his first win at Anfield as Arsenal manager, strengthening the Gunners’ position at the top of the table as the Premier League title race continues.
