He is taking over when they’re in disarray – Paul Merson on what Erik Ten Hag should do at Manchester United

Former English footballer Paul Merson reckons new Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag will have his work cut out at the club in the upcoming season. The Red Devils had a horrible previous season in the English Premier League as they finished at the sixth place in the standings.

Furthermore, the Men in Red could only muster 58 points in the season, which was their worst-ever points tally in the history of the league. United have failed to win a silverware in the last few seasons and Merson believes the Dutch manager will have to rebuild the team from scratch as they cannot win with this team.

In fact, the performances of all the players, except for Cristiano Ronaldo and David de Gea, were mundane throughout the season. Merson feels Erik Ten Hag will need to rope in some good players at Manchester United to help the team turn the tables. The football pundit believes Red Devils need to bring in players like De Jong.

Merson told Sky Sports: “If Ten Hag managed for the rest of his life, it’ll never be harder than what he’s taking on now. This is a massive job. It’s the biggest club in the world and he is taking over when they’re in disarray.

“He needs to bring in as many players as he can because this team is not going to get you in the top four. They need to bring certain players in – (Frenkie) De Jong at Barcelona, he’s a good footballer – and then you move on from there. They need at least three or four players just to make a challenge for fourth place.”

There is no doubt that Erik Ten Hag will have a tough job of turning the corner for Manchester United as they are well behind top teams like Manchester City, Liverpool, and Chelsea.

Meanwhile, as per TalkSport, Christian Eriksen has declined the offer to join Manchester United.
