Jarell Quansah Joins Bayer Leverkusen in £35m Switch from Liverpool

Bayer Leverkusen have secured the signing of highly-rated centre-back Jarell Quansah from Liverpool in a £35 million deal, with the 22-year-old committing to a five-year contract with the Bundesliga club.

Quansah, who recently helped England win the European Under-21 Championship by defeating Germany in the final, becomes Leverkusen’s latest addition in a busy transfer window. His move marks the third transaction between the two clubs this summer, following Liverpool’s high-profile acquisitions of Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong.

The transfer also represents a significant financial boost for Liverpool, as Quansah, a product of their academy system, qualifies as a homegrown player. Under Premier League profit and sustainability rules (PSR), the full fee will be recorded as pure profit.

Quansah made 58 appearances and scored three goals for Liverpool since breaking into the senior squad. His rise was a bright spot for the club in recent seasons. He played a key role in Liverpool’s League Cup triumph in 2024 and featured in 13 league matches during the title-winning campaign under manager Arne Slot.

Newcastle United had previously shown interest in the young defender, proposing a swap deal involving winger Anthony Gordon last summer. However, Liverpool turned down the offer, opting to retain the promising talent at the time.

Speaking on the signing, Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes said, “He has already made an impressive impact in a Liverpool defence dominated by world-class players. With Jarell, our defence gains significant dynamism, pace and toughness in tackling, and he’s another very important building block for the future.”

Liverpool’s decision to part ways with Quansah comes amid a broader reshuffle in defence. The club is reportedly eyeing Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi as a potential replacement. Meanwhile, uncertainty looms over the futures of Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez. Konate, whose contract runs until next summer, has yet to agree to an extension, raising questions about his long-term stay at Anfield.

Quansah’s move represents a fresh chapter for both the player and Bayer Leverkusen, who are looking to strengthen their backline with young talent. For Liverpool, the departure opens the door for new defensive signings as the club continues its transition under Arne Slot.
