Jorge Jesus: Ronaldo remains indispensable to Portugal

Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus has reaffirmed Cristiano Ronaldo’s importance to the national team ahead of Thursday’s UEFA Nations League clash with Wales, while making clear that the veteran forward will not automatically play every match.

Ronaldo, 41, had considered ending his international career following Portugal’s elimination from the 2026 World Cup by eventual champions Spain. 

However, the Al-Nassr forward decided to continue after discussions with the Portuguese president and coach, saying he still believes he can contribute to a new generation of players. 

Speaking ahead of the Wales encounter, Ronaldo admitted that retirement could still come soon. 

The Portugal captain said he has learned to focus on the present and revealed that it is “very possible” the current season could be his final year, although he intends to announce his retirement only when the time comes.

Ronaldo also explained that his motivation remains centred on helping Portugal, particularly through goals and his experience. 

He said criticism no longer affects him as much as it once did and stressed that he wants to remain meaningful to supporters even after his playing career ends.

Jesus, meanwhile, described Ronaldo as “a symbol of Portugal” but insisted that his status does not guarantee him a place in every game. 

The coach pointed to the difference in attendance for a Portugal match in Hong Kong when Ronaldo was absent and when he played, saying the crowd increased from around 5,000 to 55,000. 

“Cristiano is a symbol of Portugal. That does not give him the right to play every match, but to give you an idea: we played a match in Hong Kong without him, and there were 5,000 spectators. When he took part, there were 55,000.” Jesus said.

Jesus confirmed that Ronaldo is expected to start against Wales if there are no unexpected developments in training. 

The coach also joked that he hopes Ronaldo scores one or two goals before being substituted, as Portugal begin their Nations League campaign with Ronaldo still playing a significant role in the team’s plans.
