Kompany mixes up Bayern’s right-back choices

Vincent Kompany has been shuffling Bayern Munich’s right-back options during the Club World Cup. 

Konrad Laimer, the Austrian star, is Kompany’s top pick for the role. Laimer started on the bench against Auckland City FC but featured against Boca Juniors. He was rested for the Benfica match, giving Sacha Boey two group-stage starts.

Boey, the 24-year-old French defender, faced an injury scare against Benfica but is fit for the round of 16 clash with Flamengo. 

However, he’s likely to be benched, with Laimer expected to start against the Brazilian side. Since joining from Galatasaray in 2024, Boey has battled injuries and inconsistent form, sidelining him for long periods. 

Bayern are now considering selling him this summer, with Galatasaray and Olympique Marseille linked. Marseille prefers a loan, but Bayern favor a permanent transfer.

Interest from France has intensified, with reports suggesting other Ligue 1 clubs may join the race for Boey’s signature, seeing him as a valuable addition to their defenses.

Despite the speculation, Boey wants to stay at Bayern and fight for his place. He feels settled in Munich, and his future will likely be decided post-Club World Cup. 

Kompany, who once targeted Boey for Burnley, expected improvement, but injuries have limited his chances. Boey’s determination to succeed at Bayern stems from his belief in his potential to thrive under Kompany’s guidance despite the setbacks. 

Meanwhile, Bayern are thrilled with Laimer’s performances since his move from RB Leipzig two years ago. The club is eyeing a contract extension for the versatile Austrian, whose adaptability across midfield and defense has been a key asset.

If Boey departs, Bayern aren’t planning to sign a new right-back. Laimer will hold the position, with Josip Stanisic as backup. Stanisic, a product of Bayern’s youth system, has proven reliable when called upon, offering Kompany tactical flexibility.

The right-back situation will be reviewed as the summer transfer window progresses, with Bayern confident in their current options.
