Leverkusen braces for crucial run as Hjulmand downplays pressure ahead of Hamburg clash

Bayer Leverkusen are set to confront Hamburg in a pivotal Bundesliga encounter on Wednesday, as manager Kasper Hjulmand gears up for an intense period that could define the club’s season.

Hjulmand emphasized that he is not focusing on the mounting pressure from Leverkusen’s demanding schedule, which begins with an away trip to Volksparkstadion against Hamburg.

Currently positioned sixth in the Bundesliga standings, Leverkusen trail fourth-placed Stuttgart by six points following a dramatic late 1-1 draw against Mainz in their most recent league match.

According to Opta supercomputer simulations, Leverkusen’s prospects of securing a top-four finish stand at just 35%, lagging behind RB Leipzig at 45.5%, Stuttgart at 53.9%, and Hoffenheim at 66.1%.

Hamburg presents a formidable challenge, occupying 11th place after an impressive unbeaten streak that included a draw against table-toppers Bayern Munich.

Following the Hamburg fixture, Hjulmand’s squad will host Freiburg on Saturday, before turning their attention to the Champions League, where they welcome Arsenal to BayArena for the first leg of their round-of-16 tie just four days later.

Hjulmand explained to reporters that his role extends beyond mere employment; he is committed to delivering his utmost for the team, which is why he avoids dwelling on pressure during these upcoming weeks.

Additionally, Hjulmand assured that his players would aim for a more energetic opening compared to their sluggish performance against Mainz, where they struggled to generate meaningful opportunities in the first half.

Statistically, they managed an expected goals (xG) figure of only 0.09 from three shots before the break, though they boosted that to 1.28 in the second period.

However, Leverkusen’s offensive struggles remain a worry, with Jarell Quansah’s equalizer against Mainz marking their sole goal across the last three outings.

This dip in scoring form could prove costly as they navigate this high-stakes sequence of games, balancing domestic ambitions with European aspirations.

Hjulmand’s composed approach may be key to steadying the ship, but results on the pitch will ultimately determine if Leverkusen can climb the table and advance in the Champions League. amid growing competition.
