Manchester City have gone ahead to win another trophy, their fourth trophy of 2023, after beating Spanish side and UEFA Europa League winners Sevilla in the UEFA Super Cup played on Wednesday in Greece.
The fixture between the UEFA Champions League winner Manchester City and UEFA Europa League winner from last season was played at the Karaiskakis Stadium, the home of Olympiakos, in Athens, Greece, on Wednesday.
It offered both sides the opportunity to win another trophy and Manchester City the opportunity to win their first-ever UEFA Super Cup title. While Manchester City defeated Inter Milan in the UEFA Champions League final, Sevilla won the Europa League final last season, their record title in the competition.
The UEFA Super Cup is Manchester City’s first-ever win in the competition.
However, the game did not start in favor of Manchester City as Youssef En-Nesyri opened the scoring for the Spanish side in the first half through a header.
It will take the second half before Manchester City would equalize to true Cole Palmer, as it ended in a draw.
Coincidentally, Manchester City and Arsenal faced each other in the Community Shield two weeks ago, and it ended in another 1-1 draw, although the Gunners emerged winners on penalties.
This time around, it was Manchester City’s turn of luck to win the competition, and in a penalty shootout, Manchester City went on to win the shootout 5-4. Manchester City midfielder Jack Grealish said Pep Guardiola set the target for the team before the game.
“It was unbelievable. The manager made it so clear to us before the game how much he wants this trophy. You want to win everything anyway, but that gave us more of an urge. It was a brilliant feeling. Over the last 10 or 15 years, this club has been so successful; they’ve won so many Premier Leagues, FA Cups, and Carabao Cups. We’ve been waiting for this. To add another one to the collection. This is what I came here to do.” Jack Grealish said.
