Manchester City cruise past Liverpool to go second in the Premier League

Manchester City delivered a dominant performance to secure a comfortable 3-0 victory over Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, marking Pep Guardiola’s 1,000th game in management with style.

The win moves City up to second place in the Premier League table, just four points behind leaders Arsenal, while Liverpool’s inconsistent form continues under Arne Slot.

City took the lead in the 29th minute when Erling Haaland, whose earlier penalty had been saved by Giorgi Mamardashvili, made amends by heading home Matheus Nunes’ cross.

The home side doubled their advantage deep into first-half stoppage time as Nico González finished neatly from a Bernardo Silva assist.

Liverpool struggled to cope with City’s relentless pressure and found themselves two goals down by the interval.

In the second half, Jeremy Doku put the result beyond doubt in the 63rd minute with a superb solo goal after being set up by youngster N. O’Reilly.

The Belgian winger’s curling finish capped off a scintillating attacking display from Guardiola’s men, who looked back to their dominant best both in possession and intensity.

Liverpool offered little in response despite brief spells of pressure. Mohamed Salah came close to a consolation goal, dragging his effort just wide of the post, while Dominik Szoboszlai’s powerful drive was well saved by Gianluigi Donnarumma. Virgil van Dijk had a header ruled out earlier in the match, compounding a frustrating day for the visitors.

Liverpool’s fans were heard singing chants of “sacked in the morning” directed at Slot as frustration grew in the away end.

With the win, Manchester City reignited their title challenge and capitalized on Arsenal’s slip-up at Sunderland. They now look well-positioned to mount another charge for the Premier League crown.

Liverpool, meanwhile, will need to regroup quickly to stay within reach of the top four after a humbling afternoon in Manchester.
