Manchester City edge Aston Villa with last-gasp winner at the Etihad

Manchester City secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over Aston Villa in a crucial Premier League clash at the Etihad Stadium, with Matheus Nunes scoring a stoppage-time winner to keep their Champions League hopes alive. The game saw an early goal from Bernardo Silva, a first-half equalizer by Marcus Rashford, and a thrilling finale that left fans on the edge of their seats.

City started brightly and took the lead in the 7th minute through Bernardo Silva, who finished off a slick attacking move to put the hosts ahead. However, Aston Villa responded swiftly. Marcus Rashford leveled the score from the penalty spot in the 18th minute after a City defender was penalized for a foul inside the box. The rest of the first half remained evenly matched as both sides battled for control.

The second half saw Manchester City dominate possession, but they were frustrated by a well-organized Villa defense and an inspired performance from goalkeeper Emi Martinez. Kevin De Bruyne orchestrated several promising attacks, and City racked up nine corners in total, but couldn’t find a way through.

Aston Villa, meanwhile, looked dangerous on the counter. Substitute Donyell Malen came close late on with a powerful strike from distance, while Ollie Watkins forced a smart save from Stefan Ortega. As the clock ticked down, it seemed both sides would have to settle for a draw.

However, in the fourth minute of added time, Jeremy Doku broke down the left flank and delivered a low cross that evaded multiple defenders. Matheus Nunes arrived at the back post and smashed the ball into the net to seal the victory for City — his first Premier League goal for the club. Pep Guardiola erupted in celebration while Unai Emery looked devastated on the touchline.

The win lifts Manchester City to third in the Premier League table, strengthening their position in the race for Champions League qualification. Aston Villa, now in seventh, remain just one point behind fifth place but will rue the missed opportunity. The result adds even more intensity to the season’s final run-in, with every point proving crucial in the fight for Europe.
