Barcelona anticipating goalkeeper’s return

Barcelona are closing in on the return of one of their most experienced figures, with Marc-André ter Stegen set to make his comeback from injury next weekend.

The German goalkeeper has not featured at all this season after undergoing back surgery in the summer, but his recovery is now at an advanced stage as he pushes to be ready for the La Liga clash against Osasuna.

According to reports, Ter Stegen is awaiting final medical clearance and has significantly stepped up the intensity of his training in recent weeks.

The 33-year-old is eager to make his return at the Spotify Camp Nou, where he hopes to prove his fitness and remind head coach Hansi Flick of his long-standing value to the squad.

However, Ter Stegen’s return comes at a complicated moment in his Barcelona career. After joining the club from Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2014, he established himself as the undisputed number one for almost a decade.

That status changed during pre-season when Flick informed him that Joan Garcia would be the new first-choice goalkeeper, a decision that is unlikely to be reversed despite Ter Stegen’s recovery.

With his role reduced, Barcelona are now actively planning to move Ter Stegen on when the January transfer window opens.

His representatives have begun working on a potential exit, and several clubs are believed to be interested in signing the Germany international on loan for the second half of the season.

Regular playing time has become crucial for Ter Stegen’s international ambitions, as he aims to secure his place as Germany’s starting goalkeeper for next summer’s World Cup.

Given that Flick does not currently count on him as first choice at club level, a winter departure appears increasingly inevitable despite the goalkeeper still holding out slim hope of reclaiming his spot.

The coming weeks are expected to be decisive for all parties involved. While Barcelona are keen to resolve the situation through a January exit, the final decision ultimately rests with Ter Stegen himself.

Whether he fights for his place or seeks a fresh start elsewhere, his future is set to be one of the club’s most closely watched storylines this winter.
