Gyökeres makes demands on Arsenal teammates after Aston Villa loss

Viktor Gyökeres has called on his Arsenal teammates to show greater creativity in attack after the Gunners slipped up in their Premier League title push with a dramatic defeat to Aston Villa.

The Swedish striker admitted the mood in the dressing room was subdued after the loss, but insisted the team must quickly refocus. “We are, of course, disappointed with the result,” Gyökeres said. “It’s tough right now, but it’s only December, and there are still many games to play.”

Arsenal suffered only their second league defeat of the season as they were beaten 2-1 at Villa Park in a lunchtime kickoff that dealt a blow to their title ambitions.

The result, combined with Manchester City’s victory over Sunderland, saw Arsenal’s lead at the top of the table trimmed to just two points, intensifying the race as the busy festive period approaches.

Aston Villa took the lead late in the first half when Matty Cash fired past goalkeeper David Raya from close range. Arsenal responded positively after the break, with substitute Leandro Trossard netting his fourth league goal of the campaign to restore parity.

However, Unai Emery’s side had the final say when Emiliano Buendía struck a heartbreaking winner in the dying moments.

The defeat means Arsenal have now won just two of their last five league matches, a dip in form that has allowed title rivals to close in.

Gyökeres, who joined from Sporting CP in the summer and has battled a recent hamstring injury, has scored four league goals so far and believes improved chance creation will be key to turning results around.

“We have to keep creating chances and getting shots on goal because then you’ll eventually score more,” Gyökeres added. “Football can change in the last seconds, and unfortunately, today it went against us. But we can learn from it and focus on the next game.” The striker last found the net in Arsenal’s 2-0 victory over Burnley last month.

Manager Mikel Arteta also attempted to strike a calm tone after the setback, highlighting the challenges of the Premier League and urging his players to bounce back quickly.

Arsenal now turn their focus to a Champions League clash with Club Brugge before returning to league duty against Wolves, as they attempt to regain momentum in the title race.
