Henderson Joins Chelsea as Xabi Alonso Continues Major Squad Rebuild

England midfielder Jordan Henderson has completed a two-year move to Chelsea after mutually agreeing to terminate his contract with Brentford, becoming the latest addition to Xabi Alonso’s extensive summer recruitment drive at Stamford Bridge.

The 36-year-old arrives with vast experience, having enjoyed a trophy-laden spell at Liverpool where he captained the club to the 2019-20 Premier League title. During his time at Anfield, Henderson also lifted the Champions League, FA Cup, two League Cups, the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup.

His career has taken him across Europe and the Middle East in recent years. Henderson joined Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq in 2023 before moving to Ajax in January 2024. He returned to the Premier League with Brentford last summer and made 32 league appearances during the 2025-26 campaign.

Speaking after completing the move, Henderson said: “Given the size of the club, the manager [Xabi Alonso] who I have great admiration for, and the quality of the players, this was a huge opportunity I couldn’t turn down.”

He added: “For me, it’s about giving everything every single day, both on and off the field, to help the players around me and the team as much as possible. I’m very excited to get going.”

Henderson’s professional journey began at Sunderland, where he progressed through the academy before making his Premier League debut in a 5-0 defeat to Chelsea in November 2008. Internationally, he has earned 91 England caps since making his debut in 2010 and has represented his country at seven major tournaments, including the Euro 2021 final.

Earlier this summer, Henderson became the first English player to appear at four different FIFA World Cups when he came off the bench in England’s 2-0 win over Panama. However, his tournament was cut short after suffering a broken arm following an awkward fall while attempting to jump over advertising hoardings after England’s last-16 victory over Mexico.

Chelsea’s signing of Henderson is the club’s 10th arrival of the summer as Alonso reshapes the squad following a disappointing campaign in which the Blues finished 10th in the Premier League, one point behind Brentford, and missed out on European qualification.

The club has also strengthened with the arrivals of Morgan Rogers, Danny Welbeck, Valentin Barco, Maxence Lacroix, Marco Palestra, Geovany Quenda, Emmanuel Emegha, Denner and Dastan Satpaev. Meanwhile, defender Trevoh Chalobah is set to leave after Como agreed a deal worth more than £30 million for the Chelsea academy graduate.
