Manchester United Close to Signing Zirkzee and De Ligt, Face Setback in Branthwaite Pursuit

Manchester United, having resolved their managerial situation, are now actively pursuing key targets in the transfer market to strengthen their squad for the upcoming season.

The club recently extended head coach Erik ten Hag’s contract until 2026, a year beyond the previous agreement, ensuring stability at the helm. With this decision in place, the Red Devils have shifted their focus to the transfer market, engaging in multiple negotiations to enhance their team.

One prominent deal nearing completion is for Bologna’s Dutch striker, Joshua Zirkzee. The former Bayern Munich academy star had a breakout season under Thiago Motta in 2023-24, drawing the attention of Manchester United. The club is expected to trigger Zirkzee’s £34 million release clause. However, they are currently negotiating with Bologna to slightly increase the fee, allowing more flexibility in the payment structure.

United have already agreed on personal terms and agent’s commission with Zirkzee and his representatives. The Dutch forward was previously on AC Milan’s radar, but with Milan shifting their focus elsewhere, Manchester United now have a clear path to secure their target.

In addition to Zirkzee, Manchester United are also close to signing Dutch defender Matthijs de Ligt. The 24-year-old, an Ajax academy graduate, thrived under Ten Hag’s guidance in Amsterdam. After stints at Juventus and Bayern Munich, De Ligt is now deemed surplus to requirements at the German club.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United are leading the race to sign De Ligt, despite interest from Paris Saint-Germain. The club is currently negotiating a suitable payment structure with Bayern Munich, and De Ligt has already given his consent for a move to Old Trafford, potentially reuniting with his former Ajax manager.

Meanwhile, United’s pursuit of Everton’s rising star Jarrad Branthwaite has hit a roadblock. The club’s second bid, worth £45 million plus an additional £5 million in add-ons, was rejected by Everton. According to The Guardian, Everton value Branthwaite between £60 million and £70 million, making negotiations challenging.

Manchester United’s interest in Branthwaite highlights their intent to bolster their defensive line, adding depth and quality to a backline that has shown inconsistency in recent seasons. While the pursuit of De Ligt and Branthwaite reflects a strategic focus on defensive stability, Zirkzee’s potential addition aims to enhance their attacking options.

As Manchester United navigate these complex negotiations, the club’s supporters eagerly anticipate the arrival of these high-caliber talents. Securing these signings could be pivotal for Manchester United’s aspirations to challenge for major honors in the coming season, both domestically and in Europe.
