Matheus Nunes’ Late Heroics Secure Crucial Win for City in Champions League Race

In a thrilling Premier League clash at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday, Matheus Nunes scored a dramatic 94th-minute winner to lift Manchester City to a pivotal 2-1 victory over Aston Villa, keeping Pep Guardiola’s men firmly in contention for a Champions League berth next season.

With the match poised at 1-1 and both teams appearing destined to share the points, Nunes latched onto a low cross from substitute Jeremy Doku, smashing the ball past Villa’s Emi Martinez to seal all three points for the defending champions. The win pushed City into third place in the league table with 61 points, although they’ve played one more match than the trio of teams chasing just behind.

Aston Villa, meanwhile, continued their miserable record at the Etihad, slumping to a 15th straight defeat at the stadium and remaining seventh in the standings with 57 points. The loss dealt a blow to their own European aspirations amid a tightly packed race at the top.

City opened the scoring in the seventh minute through Bernardo Silva, who finished off a well-orchestrated move that began with Omar Marmoush darting past Villa right back Matty Cash. Marmoush squared the ball into the box for Silva, whose shot snuck past Martinez despite the keeper getting a hand to it.

Villa responded swiftly. Just 11 minutes later, Marcus Rashford converted from the penalty spot after a VAR check confirmed Ruben Dias had clipped Jacob Ramsey in the box. Rashford, who had rattled the post inside the opening seconds, sent City’s stand-in keeper Stefan Ortega the wrong way to draw Villa level.

The game then turned into an end-to-end battle, with both sides creating opportunities but failing to convert. City, sensing the urgency, brought on Doku late in the second half, and the winger’s pace and precision proved decisive in stoppage time.

While City celebrated a crucial victory, Guardiola acknowledged the pressure of the congested table. “Every match is like a final now. We showed resilience today, and that’s what it takes at this stage,” he said.

With the season nearing its climax, Manchester City’s narrow win keeps them in the thick of the Champions League race, while Villa will need to regroup quickly to stay in the hunt for a top-four finish.
