Paris Saint-Germain striker Kylian Mbappe has admitted that his relationship with teammate Neymar is not always great, but there is mutual respect between them.
Many had wondered how cordial the relationship of the Paris Saint-Germain stars after they clashed over penalties.
Mbappe has been the first-choice penalty taker for the Paris club. But Neymar took the spot kick against Montpellier, and there was a breakdown in the relationship between the star attackers earlier this season. The pair argued over who would take a penalty in the Ligue 1 clash, giving a hint of what’s going on behind the scenes.
According to some reports, Mbappe envied Neymar’s influence in the dressing room.
Speaking on the situation, the French forward said it has been a usual thing between them, having spent six years at the club.
“We have always had a relationship like this, based on respect, sometimes colder and sometimes warmer. I have great respect for him and his influence on the team.”
Speaking on the likely penalty taker in their next game, a Champions League clash with Juventus, the world cup winner said that’s yet to be decided.
While admitting that being first-choice doesn’t mean you’re going to take all penalties, Mbappe pointed out that “You have to know how to divide the cake.”
Despite the reported breakdown in their relationship, the duo have been excellent. Mbappe has scored seven goals so far for the capital club, while Neymar is the top scorer with seven goals and six assists.
The relationship of the duo off the pitch might not be of concern so far as they continue to deliver whenever they are on the pitch.
The Ligue 1 holders will hope to maintain their good form on Tuesday when they meet Juventus in the first Champions League group stage match of the season.
