Julian Nagelsmann has made it clear that Deniz Undav’s role in the Germany squad will not change ahead of the World Cup, despite the striker’s dramatic winning goal against Ghana on Monday night.
Undav, who plays his club football for Stuttgart, netted in the 88th minute to secure a hard-fought 2-1 victory for his side.
The match took place in Stuttgart, where the local hero was warmly received by the home supporters. Kai Havertz had opened the scoring for Germany from the penalty spot during the first half.
This latest triumph extends Germany’s impressive winning streak to seven consecutive matches. It represents their longest run of victories since they achieved eight straight wins under former coach Hansi Flick between September 2021 and March 2022.
Although Undav made the decisive contribution, his overall performance after coming on for Serge Gnabry at half-time was somewhat subdued.
He recorded the fewest touches of any German player with just 13 and completed only six passes. Remarkably, his late winner was the only shot he attempted throughout his time on the pitch.
Post-match, Nagelsmann remained firm in his assessment, stating that the goal would not alter his plans for the forward.
The Germany head coach highlighted that Undav has always made the most of his opportunities whenever selected.
The Stuttgart crowd cheered loudly when Undav was introduced at the start of the second half. However, team-mate Leroy Sane faced jeers from sections of the supporters when he entered the fray in the 78th minute.
The Galatasaray man later provided the crucial assist for Undav’s winning strike. Following the match, Undav appealed for fans to show their support for Sane in upcoming games.
With the World Cup on the horizon, Nagelsmann is focused on maintaining squad stability and harmony as Germany continues its positive momentum.
