Tottenham appoints Roberto De Zerbi

Roberto De Zerbi has agreed a five-year deal to become the new head coach of Tottenham Hotspur, with an official announcement expected soon.

The Italian has been identified as the club’s overwhelming first choice following the departure of Igor Tudor, who left his role after just 44 days in charge.

Tottenham currently sit 17th in the Premier League, just one point above the relegation zone with seven matches remaining.

Despite the precarious position, De Zerbi’s contract reportedly does not include a relegation clause, underlining his commitment to a long-term project regardless of the club’s divisional status next season.

The 46-year-old arrives with a strong managerial reputation, particularly from his time at Brighton & Hove Albion, where he guided the club to a historic sixth-place finish and European qualification.

Known for his attacking style and tactical approach, De Zerbi was also seen as an ideal candidate due to his prior experience in English football and his ability to develop teams over time.

However, his immediate task will be challenging. Historical data suggests De Zerbi has often struggled in the early stages of mid-season appointments.

During previous spells at clubs such as Palermo and Benevento, he recorded limited success in his first seven matches, while his start at Brighton in 2022 also yielded mixed results before a significant turnaround.

Across his managerial career, De Zerbi has produced impressive overall statistics. His points-per-game and win percentages at clubs including Shakhtar Donetsk and Marseille highlight his ability to deliver consistent results over longer periods, reinforcing Tottenham’s belief in his long-term suitability.

Tottenham’s decision to appoint De Zerbi marks their third managerial change of the season, following the earlier exit of Ange Postecoglou and Tudor’s short-lived tenure.

With a crucial run of fixtures ahead, De Zerbi’s immediate focus will be to secure the club’s Premier League survival while laying the foundations for a broader rebuild.
