Newcastle announces Eddie Howe as manager

Newcastle United has announced former Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe has their new manager after sacking Steve Bruce some weeks ago.

Graeme Jones has been in caretaker charge since October 20 when Steve Bruce was relieved of his duty just after his 1000th managerial game.

Newcastle had been linked with several managers to take over the vacant post including former Roma manager Paulo Fonseca and most prominently and recently, former Arsenal and current Villarreal manager Unai Emery who failed to take the job.

However, the Toons have settled with Eddie Howe offering him a two-and-a-half-year contract. The former Bournemouth manager will have his work cut out in ensuring that the Magpies avoid relegation.

The job also gives him the opportunity to return to the top flight after relegation with Bournemouth in 2020.

While speaking to the club’s website on Monday the manager revealed that it was an honor to become the manager of the club which recently underwent a £300 million ($403m) takeover by a Saudi-led consortium

“It is a great honor to become head coach of a club with the stature and history of Newcastle United. It is a very proud day for me and my family.” Howe said.

Eddie Howe started his managerial career as a 31-year-old after an injury put a premature end to his playing days. He has taken charge of Burnley before taking Bournemouth from the lower ranks of English football to the Premier League in 2015

Newcastle is second to the bottom of the Premier League table after a 1-1 draw with Brighton at the weekend.

They are also yet to record a victory this season in the Premier League the only Premier League side yet to do so.

Eddie Howe’s first game in charge of the club will be after the international break, against Brentford who lost to Norwich City at the weekend.
