Spain, Argentina clash in New York New Jersey for World Cup crown

Spain and Argentina will battle for the FIFA World Cup trophy on Sunday as two of international football’s most successful teams meet in a heavyweight final at the New York New Jersey Stadium. 

The showdown will see reigning world champions Argentina attempt to retain their crown against the reigning European champions, with kick-off scheduled for 3:00 p.m. local time (9:00 p.m. in Spain and 4:00 p.m. in Argentina). It will be the 104th and final match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Spain head into the final on the back of an impressive semi-final victory over France, producing one of their finest performances of the tournament with a dominant display of possession-based football. 

Luis de la Fuente’s side topped Group H despite being held to a goalless draw by surprise package Cabo Verde before recording victories over Saudi Arabia and Uruguay. 

La Roja then defeated Austria in the Round of 32 before edging past Portugal and Belgium thanks to late goals from Mikel Merino, setting up a return to the World Cup final for the first time since lifting the trophy in South Africa in 2010.

Argentina’s route to the final has been far more dramatic. Lionel Scaloni’s side opened with three consecutive group-stage victories, inspired by captain Lionel Messi, who has scored eight goals at the tournament. 

However, the knockout rounds tested the defending champions, who needed extra time to overcome Cabo Verde and Switzerland, while producing a remarkable comeback from two goals down to defeat Egypt 3-2 in the Round of 16.

The South Americans once again showcased their resilience in the semi-finals against England. 

After Anthony Gordon gave the Three Lions the lead early in the second half, Argentina responded through a stunning long-range strike from Enzo Fernandez before substitute Lautaro Martinez headed home the winner to seal a 2-1 victory. 

The result booked Argentina’s second consecutive World Cup final as they seek to become back-to-back world champions.

Spain and Argentina have met only once previously at the FIFA World Cup, with the Albiceleste claiming a 2-1 victory during the group stage of the 1966 tournament in England. 

While Spain have enjoyed the better record in friendly meetings over the years, winning six of their 13 encounters, Argentina will hope their World Cup pedigree continues on the biggest stage.

With continental champions facing world champions, Sunday’s final is set to deliver one of the most anticipated matches of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
