PSG inches closer to Ligue 1 title

European champions Paris Saint-Germain will officially be crowned Ligue 1 champions in Lens on Wednesday if they secure at least a draw.

The opportunity presented itself to the Paris club as they could officially clinch another French league title on Wednesday evening in Lens in a rescheduled week 29 match.

The Parisians and their closest rivals would face off, and the result could officially crown them champions, having already 99% certain to win the title.

PSG had been at the summit of the log for several weeks. They are moving even closer to their 14th Ligue 1 title and 5th in a row.

All Luis Enrique’s men need to clinch the championship on Wednesday in their away match against Lens in the rescheduled game is to earn a point.  

The game was postponed to ease PSG’s Champions League schedule – from Matchday 29 of Ligue 1, against the host.

PSG will head into the tie after being held at bay by Brest for much of Sunday night’s match. Enrique’s men finally broke through thanks to Désiré Doué’s 82nd-minute goal, securing a 1-0 victory.

The win gave PSG a six-point lead over Lens with just two matchdays remaining for both teams. So, to officially clinch the French championship, the capital club only needs to avoid defeat at Bollaert.

However, if Les Sang et Or defeat them, they will still have the advantage as they would need to pull off a near-impossible feat to keep their title hopes alive. 

If they finish level on points, goal difference would be the tiebreaker.  PSG currently holds a commanding lead of +44 compared to Lens’ +29.

Therefore, Lens would need a resounding and huge scoreline victory on Wednesday, followed by another PSG collapse on the final day against Paris FC (coupled with a big win for Lens in Lyon) to completely turn the tide.

This is therefore unrealistic as PSG already look home and dry as far as the title is concerned.

As for Enrique, PSG have already won the title.

The +15 goals difference is a huge margin to cover, even if Pierre Sage’s side wins the ties.

A confident Enrique said they needed points despite being champions already, but what they have is already enough, and it allows his lads to prepare on an individual level for the two final matches to then prepare for the Champions League final against Arsenal.
