Real Madrid face Atlético Madrid in La Liga top-of-the-table fixture

The 238th Madrid derby is set to take place, with Real Madrid hosting city rivals Atlético Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium. The stakes are high, as Real Madrid currently leads Atlético Madrid by just one point at the top of the La Liga table. Real Madrid will be seeking a positive response to their shocking 1-0 defeat to relegation-threatened Espanyol last weekend.

Real Madrid’s defeat to Espanyol was marred by controversy, as the club formally complained about the officiating after Carlos Romero was only booked for a wild challenge on Kylian Mbappé. To add insult to injury, Romero went on to score the winner. The defeat was also compounded by an injury to Antonio Rüdiger, leaving manager Carlo Ancelotti short of central defenders.

Atlético Madrid, on the other hand, comes into the match in good form, having started February strongly with a 2-0 win over Mallorca and a 5-0 thrashing of Getafe in the Copa del Rey. Manager Diego Simeone will be looking to build on this momentum and claim a rare triumph at the Bernabéu. Simeone recently celebrated his 500th La Liga match in charge of Atlético Madrid, and a win over Real Madrid would be the perfect way to mark the occasion.

The match promises to be a closely contested affair, with both teams having a lot to play for. Real Madrid has a strong home record against Atlético Madrid, having not lost a home league match against their city rivals since February 2016. However, Atlético Madrid will be looking to cause an upset and take the top spot in the La Liga table.

Players to watch include Brazilian Samuel Lino, who has scored in three of Atlético Madrid’s last four games, and Vinícius Júnior, who has provided five assists in 14 previous Madrid derby appearances. The match is expected to be a high-intensity affair, with both teams giving it their all in pursuit of victory.

The last four La Liga meetings between the two teams at the Bernabéu have produced exactly two goals each, with three of those matches producing one goal in each half. Will this trend continue, or will one of the teams manage to break the mold and secure a convincing victory?
