Salah stars as Liverpool wins nine-goal thriller

Liverpool regained their four-point lead at the Premier League summit with a thrilling 6-3 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in North London. The win marked Liverpool’s 16th head-to-head victory over Tottenham in their last 24 top-flight meetings. Mohamed Salah stole the show with four goal contributions, including three goals, to help Liverpool dominate the match.

The Reds’ dominant performance in the first half highlighted their title ambitions, with Fraser Forster’s goal coming under intense pressure from the outset. Salah’s early effort into the side-netting was a sign of things to come, as Liverpool’s shots rained down on Forster’s goal. The breakthrough finally came midway through the half, as Trent Alexander-Arnold’s pinpoint cross was headed into the bottom corner by Luis Díaz.

As the break approached, Liverpool’s pressure earned them a well-deserved second goal. Andrew Robertson’s cross was not dealt with by the Tottenham defense, allowing Alexis Mac Allister to head the ball past Forster.

However, Mac Allister’s heroics were short-lived, as he was dispossessed by Dejan Kulusevski, allowing James Maddison to curl home and halve Tottenham’s deficit. Salah restored Liverpool’s two-goal lead in first-half stoppage time, slotting through Dominik Szoboszlai to finish.

The second half saw Liverpool continue their ruthless attacking play, with Salah turning home from point-blank range after Spurs failed to clear Cody Gakpo’s cutback. Salah added his third goal during the hour, netting Liverpool’s fifth after being played by Szoboszlai.

Tottenham’s commitment to attacking play saw them reduce the arrears through Kulusevski’s volley and Dominic Solanke’s late strike, but Liverpool sealed the win with Díaz’s sixth goal.

The victory marked Tottenham’s 10th defeat from their last 12 meetings, with sides starting the day at the Premier League summit. Liverpool’s dominant performance will boost their title ambitions, while Tottenham will look to regroup ahead of their EFL Cup semi-final clash with Liverpool in the new year.

The win sets up an exciting encounter between the two sides in the EFL Cup semi-finals, with both managers given a glimpse of what to expect. Liverpool’s eyes are firmly fixed on greater prizes, and their performance against Tottenham highlighted exactly why they are title contenders.
