Schlotterbeck faces several months out with Ankle Injury

Nico Schlotterbeck is expected to miss an extended period after picking up an ankle ligament injury during Germany’s 2-1 victory over Ivory Coast at the 2026 World Cup. 

The Borussia Dortmund defender sustained the problem in the second group-stage match and has been ruled out for several months, according to the German Football Federation (DFB).

The 26-year-old had been a key figure in Julian Nagelsmann’s plans and started Germany’s opening two wins a 7-1 thrashing of Curacao and the narrow success against Ivory Coast. 

He was substituted at half-time in the latter game by Antonio Rudiger and will now miss the remainder of the tournament.

Schlotterbeck enjoyed an impressive 2024/25 Bundesliga campaign with Dortmund, making 28 appearances and helping secure 11 clean sheets as BVB finished second behind Bayern Munich. 

Statistically, he ranked among the team’s strongest performers, with 127 clearances second only to Waldemar Anton’s 165 while placing third in aerial duels won (66) and joint-third in interceptions (27).

The DFB confirmed that Schlotterbeck suffered a medial ligament injury in his left ankle during the match in Toronto on Saturday.

Nagelsmann expressed disappointment at losing the centre-back, stating that the team would miss him greatly as an outstanding defender, particularly for his excellent build-up play. He added that it could have been Schlotterbeck’s World Cup. 

The manager noted that the squad had tried to support him the previous day and was pleased that the player, known for his positive attitude, was already looking forward. 

Nagelsmann highlighted it as encouraging that Schlotterbeck would remain with the team for now, given his influence off the pitch as well. 

Despite the absence, the coach stressed that Germany remained well-equipped in central defence with options including Jonathan Tah, Antonio Rudiger, Waldemar Anton, and Malick Thiaw.

Germany have already topped Group E and will face Ecuador on Thursday before meeting one of the best third-placed teams in the round of 32 in Boston on June 29. 

The injury represents a significant blow to both club and country, depriving Dortmund of a reliable starter and Nagelsmann of a trusted performer capable of dictating play from the back. 

Fans and teammates will hope for a strong recovery as the defender begins his rehabilitation.
