Senegal wins second AFCON after dramatic final against hosts, Morocco

Senegal were crowned Africa Cup of Nations champions after a dramatic 1-0 victory over Morocco following extra time in a controversial and emotionally charged final in Rabat.

Pape Gueye’s goal four minutes into extra time settled a pulsating contest at the Stade Prince Moulay Abdallah, giving Senegal their second continental title after their triumph in 2021.

The match was defined by high tension and late drama in normal time. Senegal thought they had won the game in stoppage time when a goal was disallowed, only for Morocco to be awarded a penalty moments later at the other end.

The decision sparked fury among the Senegal players, who left the pitch in protest for several minutes before eventually returning to resume play.

With the final kick of normal time, Morocco forward Brahim Diaz attempted a Panenka penalty, but Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy read it perfectly and saved, keeping the score level at 0-0 and sending the final into extra time.

The miss proved a pivotal moment, shifting momentum decisively in Senegal’s favour. Just four minutes into extra time, Pape Gueye struck the decisive blow, finding the net to give Senegal the lead.

From that point on, the West African side defended resolutely, soaking up sustained Moroccan pressure as rain poured down on the capital and emotions ran high in the stands.

Morocco, champions once before in 1976, pushed desperately for an equaliser but struggled to break down Senegal’s disciplined defence.

As the final whistle sounded after added time, Moroccan players collapsed to the turf in tears, while Senegal’s players and supporters erupted in celebration.

Pundits described the final as one of the most dramatic in Afcon history, marked by controversy, quality and unforgettable moments.

Senegal were widely praised as worthy winners, while Morocco were left to reflect on a tournament in which they had played impressive football but ultimately fell short at the final hurdle.
