Tottenham Hotspur delivered a season-defining performance to move out of the Premier League relegation zone with a hard-fought 2-1 win against Aston Villa, marking a significant step forward under new head coach Roberto De Zerbi.
The result came at a critical moment, with West Ham United slipping to defeat at Brentford a day earlier, opening the door for Spurs to climb above them in the standings. Tottenham seized the opportunity with authority, producing arguably their most complete display of a turbulent campaign.
Despite missing attacking options Xavi Simons and Dominic Solanke, Spurs started brightly and were rewarded early. Conor Gallagher broke the deadlock in the 12th minute with a crisp low strike from distance, registering his first goal since his January move from Atletico Madrid.
Tottenham continued to dominate proceedings, with Joao Palhinha striking the post before the visitors doubled their lead. Richarlison rose to head home emphatically from Mathys Tel’s cross in the 25th minute, leaving Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez with no chance.
Villa boss Unai Emery made seven changes following his side’s Europa League semi-final setback against Nottingham Forest, and the lack of cohesion was evident. The hosts struggled to cope with Tottenham’s aggressive pressing and midfield control, led by Palhinha and Rodrigo Bentancur.
Although substitute Emi Buendia managed to pull a goal back in stoppage time from a cross by Matty Cash, the late effort proved inconsequential.
Defensively, Tottenham remained composed throughout, with Micky van de Ven and Kevin Danso providing a solid backbone.
The victory lifts Spurs one point clear of the relegation zone with just three matches remaining, offering renewed belief in their fight for survival. After months of inconsistency and pressure, De Zerbi’s influence appears to be taking hold, with this result potentially marking a turning point in Tottenham’s season.
