UEFA Champions League: David’s strike helps Lille stun Real Madrid

Real Madrid’s hopes of extending their 36- 36-unbeaten streak in all competitions were dashed after Wednesday’s 1-0 loss in the hands of Lille in France.

The hosts, LOSC Lille, produced one of the shocking results on matchday two of the extended UEFA Champions League, pipping the 15-time winners of the competition to bag their eighth win in their last nine European home games.

Expectedly, Real Madrid made a bright start to their campaign in Europe with a 3-1 humbling of Stuttgart in their first match, and the prospects of following up that result with another win on Wednesday were not meant to be.

The European Champions stamped their authority on the game as early as possible, with a little over five minutes on the clock gone when they created their first chance of the night. Some dogged effort from Jude Bellingham won the ball back for Vinícius Júnior, but his stinging drive was beaten away by Lucas Chevalier.

Bruno Génésio’s men kept coming up with a series of questions and almost struck gold in a fortuitous fashion when Benjamin André’s miscued cross had Lunin worried, but it clipped the woodwork and went away to safety.

Real eventually conceded on the stroke of half-time when Edon Zhegrova’s free-kick was blocked by Eduardo Camavinga inside the area. David assumed responsibility from the spot and sent Lunin the wrong way from 12 yards.

Even after the break, the one-way traffic continued towards the Real goal, and Lille came within a whisker of adding a second when Zhegrova curled an effort inches wide of the post.

This defeat off a lackluster performance won’t worry Ancelotti yet; however, his side’s next three matches in the Champions League are against last season’s beaten finalists Borussia Dortmund, then AC Milan and Liverpool. Real Madrid will face Villareal in La Liga over the weekend.
