UEFA opens disciplinary action on Pedro Neto’s ball boy incident

UEFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against Chelsea winger Pedro Neto after he pushed a ball boy during Chelsea’s heavy defeat to Paris Saint‑Germain in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League last-16 tie.

The incident occurred late in Wednesday’s match at Parc des Princes, where the French champions secured a 5–2 victory.

The 26-year-old Portugal international shoved the youngster in stoppage time while trying to retrieve the ball quickly as Chelsea chased the game.

The push caused the ball boy to fall from the chair he was sitting on and briefly sparked a confrontation between players from both teams.

In a statement, UEFA confirmed that disciplinary action has been initiated against Neto for “unsporting behaviour” under its regulations.

“Disciplinary proceedings have been instigated against Pedro Neto for unsporting behaviour. UEFA’s disciplinary bodies will take a decision on this case in due course.” UEFA statement said.

The governing body said its disciplinary panel will review the case and announce a decision at a later date.

Neto later apologised for the incident, saying the reaction came in the “heat of the moment” as he tried to restart play quickly.

The winger, who joined Chelsea FC from Wolverhampton Wanderers in August 2024, said he immediately tried to make amends after the final whistle.

Speaking after the match, Neto explained that he apologised several times to the ball boy and even gave him his match shirt.

He also said Portugal team-mate Vitinha helped translate his apology because his French was limited, and that the situation ended on friendly terms with the youngster smiling.

Chelsea will host PSG in the second leg at Stamford Bridge next Tuesday as they attempt to overturn the three-goal deficit.

Before that crucial European clash, the London club will return to domestic action with a Premier League fixture against Newcastle United on Saturday.
