West Ham consider Gary O’Neil return as pressure mounts on Potter

West Ham United are weighing up a managerial change after Graham Potter’s troubled start to the Premier League season, with Gary O’Neil emerging as a leading candidate to take charge.

The Hammers’ hierarchy are said to be exploring an emotional return for their former midfielder as pressure grows following a poor run of results.

Potter’s arrival was seen as a progressive move, but his reign has quickly unraveled.

West Ham have lost four of their opening five league matches, conceding 14 goals along the way, including a damaging 3-0 defeat to rivals Tottenham.

The club’s supporters have grown restless, and the board is now seriously considering a change in the dugout to prevent further decline.

O’Neil, who has built a reputation for steering struggling sides to safety, is reportedly one of the favourites to replace Potter.

The 42-year-old impressed with survival stints at Bournemouth and Wolves, where his ability to organize squads under pressure drew plaudits across the league.

His track record of thriving in difficult circumstances has made him an appealing option for West Ham’s board.

One key advantage in pursuing O’Neil is his availability. Having been out of work since leaving Wolves last December, the club would not need to pay compensation to secure his services.

That financial freedom strengthens his case at a time when mid-season appointments often come with costly contract complications.

For West Ham fans, the possibility of O’Neil’s return also carries emotional weight.

The former midfielder played for the club between 2011 and 2013, earning respect for his work rate during a transitional era.

The idea of one of their own stepping back into the London Stadium dugout is already resonating with sections of the fanbase.

The board is said to be impressed by O’Neil’s pragmatic style, ability to motivate players, and experience in difficult environments.

With a crucial fixture against Crystal Palace looming, West Ham are running out of time to turn their season around, and O’Neil’s name sits firmly at the top of their shortlist should they decide to part ways with Potter.
