McLaren clears up racing rules for drivers ahead of Azerbaijan GP

McLaren drivers Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris have explained their internal racing rules ahead of the upcoming Azerbaijan Grand Prix, aiming to smooth their intense title battle after some late-race controversy at the Italian Grand Prix.

This comes after the dramatic swap between the two teammates during the Monza race, where team orders forced Piastri to give the position back to Norris following a slow pit stop that had shuffled the running order.

The incident saw Norris, who was leading McLaren’s charge in second place at the time, suffer a delayed pit stop. This allowed Piastri, who pitted a lap earlier with a quicker stop, to jump ahead.

McLaren, seeking to maintain their strategic order, instructed Piastri to give back the track position, restoring Norris ahead. This decision was quickly accepted by both drivers, although it generated discussion over the team’s internal racing protocols.

Following the race, McLaren boss Andrea Stella indicated that the team would review their approach to avoid confusion in future races. Ahead of the Azerbaijan GP, both drivers stated that the details of their racing conduct had been fully resolved.

Piastri described the discussions as constructive, stating the team had “clarified a lot of things” and that they now know “how we are going to go racing going forward,” although without going into details..

Norris echoed this sentiment, noting that the rules of engagement between him and Piastri remained as before, with no fundamental changes implemented: “It was something that was brought up, it was something we all spoke about as a team and we all have a very good understanding of and all accepted. We are happy, we continue working the way we want and that’s all we need to do.”

The issue of team orders and racing fairness has been a recurring theme for McLaren this season. In a similar scenario last year at the Hungarian GP, Norris was asked to sacrifice a potential win to benefit Piastri.

But even with these occasional tensions, the McLaren drivers have maintained a respectful rivalry, as they are more focused on contributing positively to the team’s success.
