Players Championship Cancelled as The Masters Gets Postponed

 
The Players Championship, which began on Thursday, 12th of March has been cancelled in relation to the spread of the now cureless Coronavirus Threatens.

The event, which began with 63 under 9 at the top of the board by Japanese player Hideki Matsuyama was expected to finish on Sunday 15th of March, before its cancellation.

It’s cancellation came even after the organisers had already said after Thursday’s game, the first round, other games would be played without fans. This was the limit the spread of the coronavirus and to reduce the risk of someone contracting it. According to the management, the cancellation was the best decision to take for both the players and fans.

They announced with that cancellation the cancellation of all tour events up to the Valero Texas Open. They also reiterated their commitment to being responsible and maintaining transparency. Following the cancellation, the board has announced that half of the prize money of $15m would be shared among all the players. The rules of the game allow 50% or half of the prize money to be shared among all players as long as the first round of the game was completed and four players were able to complete it on Thursday.

But the Players Championship is not the only tournament to suffer as The Masters, a major event has been postponed, the first time in 75 years. The Masters, scheduled to begin on the 9th of April, was postponed, without any new date, at a time when other sports were also banning or suspending activities.

The cancellation means there would be no tour event till the 16th of April when the RBC Heritage starts. In the same way, the ANA inspiration, a major event for women has also been postponed.

Many PGA stars have expressed their support for the postponement with Jason Day calling it “necessary steps”.
