European football suspended amid corona shutdown

 
All the major European football leagues as well as the UEFA continental competitions Champions League and Europa League have been suspended or the games postponed until further notice. Football is not the only sport affected, but many other events, such as golf’s Masters and London Marathon have been postponed. Many countries have forbidden gatherings of large crowds, which further demands suspension of all popular sports.

English Premier League will be out of action at least until 3rd of April, when the situation is reassessed. It is highly likely that further postponement is due, as the approaching Euro 2020 tournament will most likely be moved to 2021 – no official decision has been made, though. Liverpool’s run at their first Premiership title in 30 years got another blow, as it might be the whole season is scrapped if it can’t be finished by playing. At least Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta and Chelsea’s Callum Hudson-Odoi have been tested positive for corona and the relevant teams are under self-quarantine.

Italian Serie A also suspended all action until 3rd of April. Juventus defender Daniel Rugani was tested positive and additional positive cases pop up constantly. The virus has hit Italy hardest in Europe and the call for action came from the government, after Serie A still commenced behind closed doors last weekend. Spanish La Liga has followed suit and will be on hold until April.

French Ligue 1 and German Bundesliga are suspended indefinitely, with no plan to go forward. It is likely the season is over and no more games are played. The games had been played behind closed doors, but as the spreading of the virus has reached the teams and players, the decision to suspend all the activity was made on Friday.

While the European football is in turmoil and there’s no light at the end of the tunnel, games are still ongoing for example in Australia, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico and Russia.
