England suffer six-wicket defeat to India

India defeated England by six wickets in the first ODI at Edgbaston to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. 

The visitors chased down a target of 249 with more than 11 overs to spare, finishing on 251 for 4 after recovering from an uncertain start. 

The victory gave India an important response after their disappointing T20 series against England and put them in a strong position heading into the second match.

England won the toss and elected to bat first, but their innings never fully settled after a bright opening. 

The hosts reached 64 without loss before India struck back with a cluster of wickets that changed the course of the innings. 

England slipped from 64-0 to 80-5, leaving the middle order with the task of rebuilding.

Joe Root and Liam Dawson provided that recovery. Root remained unbeaten on 76, while Dawson contributed 68 as the pair added 121 runs for the sixth wicket. 

Their partnership lifted England from a difficult position and helped push the total to 248 all out, giving the bowlers something to work with.

India’s bowlers were visible throughout the innings. Axar Patel produced one of the standout performances of the match, taking 4-41 and regularly breaking partnerships. 

Mohammed Shami and Harshit Rana also chipped in with key wickets as England struggled to build sustained momentum after their early collapse.

The visitors began their chase in shaky fashion as both openers were dismissed cheaply. England briefly sensed an opportunity, but Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer quickly settled the innings with a valuable partnership. 

Iyer kept the scoreboard moving with a positive approach, while Gill played the anchor role and ensured India remained ahead of the required rate.

Gill went on to score 80 before retiring hurt, leaving India in a strong position entering the closing stages of the chase. His innings once again highlighted his importance at the top of the order and provided the platform India needed after the early setbacks.

England hoped a breakthrough might reopen the contest, but Axar Patel returned to play another decisive role. 

Promoted up the order, he joined Washington Sundar and the pair removed any remaining doubt about the result. Their unbeaten century partnership carried India to the target.

The result gives India a 1-0 lead in the series and puts pressure on England ahead of the second ODI.
