India progresses to Asia Cup final with win over Sri Lanka

India secured a spot in the Asia Cup final after beating Sri Lanka by 41 runs. The win on Tuesday put an end to Sri Lanka’s impressive 13-match winning streak in ODI cricket.

Following their commanding 228-run triumph over Pakistan at the same venue just a day earlier, India managed to defend their total of 213 all out, ultimately bowling out Sri Lanka for 172 in response.

Captain Rohit Sharma’s side will now await the outcome of Thursday’s clash between Sri Lanka and Pakistan to determine their final opponent on Sunday, effectively eliminating Bangladesh’s chances of progressing from the Super Four stage.

The standout performer of the day was the young and talented Dunith Wellalage, a 20-year-old left-arm spinner who made significant contributions both with the ball and the bat.

Wellalage’s exceptional bowling display saw him claim a five-wicket haul, accounting for the dismissals of key Indian batsmen including Rohit Sharma (53), Shubman Gill (19), and Virat Kohli (3). His impressive efforts played a pivotal role as India went from a promising 80-0 to a more precarious 91-3.

Furthermore, Wellalage managed to break a vital half-century partnership between KL Rahul (39) and Ishan Kishan (33) when he dismissed Rahul with a caught-and-bowled wicket before removing Hardik Pandya (5).

Sri Lanka’s chase faced a series of setbacks, slumping to 25-3 early on and then to a precarious 99-6. However, a resilient 63-run partnership between Wellalage and Dhananjaya de Silva (41) briefly revived their hopes.

Unfortunately for Sri Lanka, their fortunes took a downturn once again, losing their final four wickets for just 10 runs following Dhananjaya’s dismissal when he was caught by Ravindra Jadeja at mid-on.

Adding to India’s impressive performance, spinner Kuldeep Yadav played a pivotal role, securing four key wickets with figures of 4-43, following his standout performance against Pakistan, where he claimed a five-wicket haul.
