Matthew Mott stepped down from his role as the head coach of England’s white-ball team on Tuesday. Mott stepped into the role in 2022 when he took over from Chris Silverwood and was quite successful in the beginning, leading the team to become the T20 World Cup champion in 2022. However, he failed to lead the team in defending their title at the recently concluded tournament.
Taking charge of the team in the meantime will be assistant coach Marcus Trescothick, until a new coach is appointed. Mott’s two-year reign witnessed three World Cup events.
In 2023, there was the Cricket World Cup, where England also failed to defend the title they won in 2019, with a particularly poor performance generally in the competition. That marked the beginning of Mott’s woes, which he failed to correct at this year’s T20 World Cup, prompting the decision to relieve him of his position.
Reacting to his departure, the managing director of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), Rob Key, thanked Mott for his time with the team and asked him to be proud of his achievement as “one of only three coaches who have won a men’s World Cup with England.”
He also said England needed a new direction to prepare for the next phase of white-ball events: “After three World Cup cycles in a short space of time, I now feel the team needs a new direction to prepare for the challenges ahead. This decision was not made lightly, but I believe it is the right time for the team’s future success.”
Key then added that the team was currently searching for a competent replacement while expressing confidence that Trescothick and skipper Jos Buttler would lead the team in the interim.
